What You Can Expect
I have chosen to work in the community as it is where I believe I have the most to offer. Working in primary care with women and their families throughout the pregnancy, labour, birth and post natal period is both a privilege and an honour and one that I take seriously as a health professional.
As your LMC providing primary maternity care, a vital part of my role is to recognise when aspects of your pregnancy, labour or birth have deviated from normal (primary) and act on this swiftly, either through referral to an obstetric doctor and/or seeking assistance from midwifery colleagues on staff at the birth centres or hospital. All midwives are trained to provide emergency care in labour should this become necessary.
Secondary maternity care occurs when a condition or circumstance arises which takes your pregnancy, labour or birth beyond the normal, physiological process. If secondary care becomes necessary at any time, I will remain your provider of primary midwifery care and work closely with core (hospital) midwives and medical colleagues so that you receive continuity of care.
I have access agreements with River Ridge East Birth Centre, Waterford Birth Centre and Waikato Women’s Hospital. I endeavour to maintain a caseload of between 4-6 women each month. This leaves me enough time to provide quality midwifery care while still caring for my own family.
I will support your decision on how to feed your baby, ensuring your choice is an informed one with information on benefits of breastfeeding and risks of formula feeding given within a supportive context.
Documentation of your entire pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal period will be available to you at all times and you are encouraged to ‘hold your own’ notes to facilitate this. A full copy of your notes will be yours to keep immediately following discharge.
My clinic rooms are located at Maternal Instinct Midwives, River Ridge Clinics, 39 Von Tempsky Street, Hamilton East. I can see you throughout your pregnancy here or, if you prefer, I am available to visit you in your home or place of work by arrangement. You can expect to meet my midwifery partner, Jennie Knight, at least once throughout your pregnancy so that you are familiar with each other and ideally, this will have occurred by the time you reach 34 weeks. Post natally, I will visit you and your baby at home until discharge to a Well Baby provider of your choice when your baby is between five to six weeks old.
I wish you and your whanau well during this exciting time and hope your experiences of pregnancy, birth and parenthood are both rewarding and fulfilling.
